Where Is God When I Feel Lonely?

Loneliness can hit in all kinds of ways. You can feel it when you are by yourself, but also when you are surrounded by people, scrolling through your phone, sitting in church, at uni, at work or with friends who seem fine.

Jesus understands that kind of loneliness. He came as Immanuel, “God with us” (Matthew 1:23), and His heart is for those who feel unseen, misunderstood or left out. When we feel most alone, He does not move away from us. He comes close.

Our hope is that these Our Daily Bread readings, reflections and prayers will help you bring your loneliness honestly to your heavenly Father. Jesus Himself knew what it was to pray in lonely places, and He could say, “I am not alone, for my Father is with me” (John 16:32). That same Father is with you too.
